MR. REUBEN NJOROGE

Sports Officer

The Sports Officer at Nyandarua National Polytechnic is the lead professional responsible for the development, coordination, and management of all athletic programs and physical wellness initiatives. Recognizing that physical health is a vital component of academic success, this office ensures that students have a wide range of opportunities to engage in competitive and recreational sports. By fostering a culture of teamwork and discipline, the Sports Officer helps build the character and leadership skills that define a well-rounded graduate.

A primary responsibility of the Sports Officer is the management and maintenance of the polytechnic’s sporting facilities and equipment. This involves overseeing the football pitches, volleyball courts, basketball arenas, and indoor games facilities to ensure they are safe and meet standard regulations for training and competition. The officer also coordinates the procurement of high-quality sports gear, from uniforms to specialized equipment for various disciplines, ensuring that every team is well-prepared for their matches.

The coordination of training schedules and the recruitment of student athletes are also central to this role. The Sports Officer works with departmental heads to ensure that practice sessions do not conflict with academic timetables. By organizing internal trials and “inter-house” competitions, the officer identifies talented individuals to represent Nyandarua National Polytechnic in regional and national tournaments. These competitions, such as those organized under the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI), allow students to showcase their skills on a larger stage and build institutional pride.

In addition to competitive sports, the Sports Officer promotes health and fitness for the entire campus community. This includes organizing aerobics sessions, fun runs, and wellness challenges that are open to both students and staff. By encouraging a physically active lifestyle, the office plays a key role in reducing stress and preventing lifestyle diseases. The officer also collaborates with the health unit and the Dean of Students to ensure that all participants are physically fit and that proper first aid is available during all sporting events.

Finally, the Sports Officer serves as a mentor and disciplinarian for student athletes. Participation in sports at the polytechnic is grounded in the values of fair play, integrity, and sportsmanship. The officer ensures that all teams adhere to the code of conduct and that athletes maintain a healthy balance between their training and their studies. Through these efforts, the Sports Officer ensures that Nyandarua National Polytechnic remains a powerhouse of athletic talent and a center for holistic student development.
